About this class:
Audiobook narration and audio description are two of the fastest growing sectors of work for trained actors and voice talents. Audiobooks are taking over the publishing industry, in some cases surpassing print sales and e-book sales in the last calendar year. Audio description, a voice track that is added to media and translates visual images into aural images so people with low or no vision, is being done with increasing regularity and will boom in the next several years as the federal government enforces mandates to make media accessible. This is a prime time to get into both fields. Positioning yourself to be an expert by the time the boom is in full swing is a wise business choice. This discussion is aimed at helping actors who are new to both fields figure out what kinds of training and equipment they need to begin working and what contacts will be helpful.
Erin deWard is an Audie Award winning audiobook narrator with over 60 titles in her catalog. She has been writing and voicing audio description for the past 9 years and is currently working on very high profile programs for Netflix. She will be joined by members of the AGR community who have been working in Audiobook narration and Audio description over the past year to discuss their experiences and their paths to this work.
**This is not a hands-on class, but rather an introductory discussion to share information and answer questions.**

Erin has been studying acting and performing since 1973. Since then, she has gone to college and lived the actor-y life of a 20 something in NYC (cocktail waitress, temp, and lots of macaroni and cheese), travelled, worked with individuals with developmental disabilities, married, renovated her house (talk about drama), raised 2 children, learned to walk more than one dog at a time, perfected her pancakes, and braved Disney World.
She has, in the past few years, become a Shakespeare geek. She takes class with Red Bull and Shakespeare and Company whenever she can. Most recently she had the pleasure of working on clowning in Shakespeare with Zach Fine and Andy Grotelueschen from Fiasco Theater.
In 2010, she was lucky enough to join The Strange Bedfellows, a company of actors who perform Shakespeare in all of his bawdy, violent, funny, and tragic glory. Instead of treating Shakespeare as some delicate, acquired taste, the Bedfellows romp, clown, fight with passion, and work to communicate the human-ness in all of Shakespeare's characters.
In addition to acting, she performs audiobook narration and provides audio description services, as a writer, a describer, and a narrator. Audio description is a translation of visual images into auditory images inserted into pauses in the dialogue of a movie, play, show, opera etc. This concise and evocative additional "soundtrack" helps people with low or no vision to more fully access media and culture.
